How to Join
Volunteering with us is a rewarding experience – but requires commitment!
Are you up for the challenge?
Wellington Operational Support is a Volunteer Fire Brigade
Membership of the Wellington Operational Support Unit means you are joining Fire and Emergency New Zealand as a volunteer Operational Support firefighter. Our primary role is to support front-line firefighters in a variety of ways, as part of the wider FENZ response to emergencies and FENZ’s engagement around community risk reduction.
We are based at Kilbirnie Fire Station, but we respond to emergencies all across Wellington and Porirua (and more distantly when requested). Part of the Wellington Fire District’s Strategic Operational Support capability, we maintain relationships with other OSU’s and provide mutual aid when requested.
Because of our base in Kilbirnie, members who reside in the eastern suburbs (south/east of the Mt Victoria Tunnel) are often given priority during recruitment – though we can recruit members in the area from Karori to Johnsonville as well.
Operational Support Services we provide include:
Traffic Management
Salvage
Domestic and commercial flooding
Storm-related damage and events
Crew Rehabilitation
Evacuation Support
Scene Protection
Scene Lighting
Incident Management Support
First Aid
Logistical Support
Victim Support
Communication and Technology Support
A special note about the role of Operational Support
Operational Support is a volunteer role that provides specialist, operational support to Firefighters who are tasked to respond to fires and other emergencies. Key points to note:
- We are a support capability – not a front-line firefighting unit. Though we may occasionally be the only Fire and Emergency (FENZ) unit attending an emergency, we are usually part of a wider FENZ response and take our operational direction from the Officer in Charge of FENZ resources at a scene.
- As a support capability, we are not trained for, or equipped with, Breathing Apparatus (BA) and as such we do not take part in ‘hot firefighting’ or any work where BA would be required.
- Although we train with waterways equipment (hoses and water supply), our role does not including the actual act of firefighting (extinguishing fire). Our role is to support others who specialise in this area, and our training recognises this and is particular to the role of Operational Support.
- Joining any volunteer fire brigade does not provide a direct pathway to the role of Career Firefighter. Despite this, serving as a volunteer does provide useful insights (and skills) that may help you during the initial stages of the career staff recruitment and training.
- There is no career/paid staff version of Operational Support. Ours is a specialist, volunteer-only role.
You can learn more about the different ways to volunteer with Fire and Emergency – including the Operational Support role – from their Volunteer Recruitment Website.
Volunteering is a substantial commitment
When considering a volunteer operational role with a Fire Brigade, it’s important to note that this is “no small thing”.
We’re looking for people who’re going to make at least a 3-5 year service commitment, and whilst serving, you will:
- Be summoned to attend emergency events as and when they occur; business hours, nights, weekends, public holidays and more. (We all accept that disruptions to sleeping patterns are part of the role).
- Be required to regularly attend brigade training nights (Monday evenings), usually at Kilbirnie Fire Station. (Regular attendance lets us maintain our skills and be confident in our ability to work safely at emergency incidents).
- Be expected to attend additional training from time to time, including additional evenings and weekends, for specialist courses (such as medical co-response) or to participate in multi-agency exercises.
- Attend community events from time to time, helping to reduce the incidence and consequence of fires and other emergencies through education and awareness. (we attend several community events each year, these are good fun and rewarding to participate in).
Not all members attend all incidents; the idea is that we share the load by each contributing what we can. Your volunteer commitments work around your work, family and other hobbies – as long as you keep up your training and emergency responses.
As volunteers, we are not paid for our time, however Fire and Emergency provides all required uniform, personal protective equipment, and covers all costs associated with operational training, and incident attendance (excluding private vehicle running costs).
In return for your commitment to FENZ and to our brigade as an Operational Support Firefighter, you’ll develop and maintain a variety of skills and experiences, gain a bunch of new colleagues and join the worldwide family of firefighters, who’re all doing their bit for the sake of their communities. Volunteering can be challenging – but it’s also highly rewarding, and we wouldn’t do it if we didn’t love what we do.
Operational Support Firefighters are eligible to be recognised with service honours from the United Fire Brigades Association, as well as the New Zealand Fire Brigades Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, issued under royal warrant.
